When it comes to a kid-friendly product that has something to do with art, I have one kid who fits the bill perfectly. I got the heads up from PBN about Fruit Roll-Ups you can design yourself, I knew just who to ask to do up the artwork.
My 12-year old son is quite a gifted artist. And he's pretty adept at the computer.
He sat down with the girls and made something created with their input. It involved jewels and princesses of course.
They'll be quite excited when the box arrives with the specially printed Fruit Roll-Ups in it.
The design and ordering process is incredibly simple. And that was actually my son's only complaint. He was hoping there would be a drawing pad option where he could click and draw a design of his own creation. He thought the designs on the site were OK, but there weren't as many to choose from as he would have liked. He also was hoping to "print" the designs on a fruit roll up color other than red, but unless we did it incorrectly, that is the only color available.
So, my parental assessment would be that this is a fun activity for younger kids who won't have such lofty expectations for creative license with an "art" project like my 12-year old did. Cost-wise these are more expensive than you'd pay for your average snack, but using them as an option for a party favor or something like that would be very fun! My older daughter turns 6 next month and what nicer thing for her to hand out to her friends than Fruit Roll Ups with her name on them for the birthday party!
I have a little giveaway I'm offering as part of this review. Simply go to the Fruit Roll-Ups site, look at the designs and leave a comment about which you like best. I'll use the trusty ol' random picker thingy and send a redemption code for you to use on your first box of custom made Fruit Roll Ups. And sorry, the code is good for US residents only.

My just turned 4 year old would love the helicopter picture. He was an "Army Man" for Halloween & loves all flying machines! Everytime we see a helicopter or airplane he tells me he wants to "drive" it. And yes, he means now. I tell him he can "fly" it when he gets older. How fun would that be for him to have helicopters with "Pilot Zayne" written on a roll-up! Even if I don't win, thanks for this great treat lead!
Sorry, but gutter-minded-me thinks you could extend this into the adult arena. Remember edible undies? It was almost a let-down to me that they were basically refashioned fruit roll-ups.
There are some sticky things that I do NOT enjoy in that area.
I'm for designing for the adult consumer too ; ) But I mainly stopped by because your comment over at Pickled Beef for "heavy and light" cracked me up. You and I think completely alike - all I could think of was "heavy flow" and "Light Days Ovals"...I finally came up with some other stuff, but it was hard to banish my first thoughts...and next week it's peek-a-boo and dirty - so my mind is already working overtime on those - and not in a G-rated way *sigh*
how cute! I liked the one on the website that was a proposal, can you imagine getting a marriage proposal off a fruit roll up your boyfriend handed you? hehe
I would love to do the ballet shoes for my daughters dance competition team. What a cute product!
I really like the cupcake & I'd have my daughter's name put on for her 3rd birthday. What a great find!!
